I know that there is some cursing but I haven't seen the movie or the musical. I know there are a lot of little kids in the cast, but can someone who has seen the musical tell me their opinion? Is Billy Elliot the Musical appropriate for a nine year old to see with her family?
Billy Elliot is an amazing musical. Yes, there is swearing, but the accent is pretty thick so it's sometimes hard to tell when they DO swear. The worst swearing, I think, is f**k, and of course your other run-of-the-mill swearing, and some British expressions, seeing as it is a British musical.
A good majority of the cast is preteen children (11, 12, 13, 14, etc.), and they ARE the ones most of the time swearing: mostly Billy, the main character, and his best mate Michael. But, once again, the accent. . . . So, it's iffy.
Also, you may want to be aware that Michael does cross-dress in the musical once or twice, and some people don't think that's appropriate for younger children.
But, overall, the musical is fabulous. I recommend it.
The movie's rated R, but that's ONLY because of the swearing. There's practically no other reason; unless you count preteen homosexuality on Michael's part.
Hope that was of help. :)
They recommend 8yrs or older. Is Billy Elliot the Musical appropriate for a nine year old to see with her family?
There is quite a lot of swearing, but nothing worse than f**k. It's an absolutely stunning musical and I think I'd take a 9 year old without any worries.
Oh, yes. An inspiring story too.
