...Why does the father break down and cry after being on the bus going to the mines? I dont get it? Why does his older son stop him? I started watching the movie halfway through and Im confusedCan some explain the mining scene in Billy Elliot film where the father cries?
Jackie (Billy's father) sees Billy dancing in the gym and realizes his son is truly gifted, and he will do whatever it takes to help Billy realize his dream. Jackie attempts to cross the picket line to pay for Billy's training, but is blocked by Tony (Billy's older brother). Crossing the picket line during a strike would have been the wrong thing to do. Instead, his fellow miners and the neighborhood raise money for Billy to continue dancing.
The Miner's striike in the 80's was a very divisive struggle. In mining communities that were on strike, scabs were seen as traitors by their striking colleagues. Plus they were very tight communities where everyone knew each other.
So for the father to cross the picket line, was completely against his own principles but he was desperate for money for the dancing, and his son stopped him doing something that he's regret. Can some explain the mining scene in Billy Elliot film where the father cries?
