My two criteria for whether something is a "gay" film is [1] if homosexuality is a major element of the plot and/or [2] if the main character is gay.
An incidentally gay character does not make a film "gay" to me.
Oh, and since you mentioned male ballet dancers, you might be surprised to learn how few male dancers are gay. Gay men are much more prevalent among dancers in musical theatre. [I have first-hand knowledge, as I work professionally in theatre.]
I don't think I'd consider it an LGBT movie. Maybe LGBT friendly?
When I think of what qualifies an LGBT movie, I think of one where main characters and plot points revolve around a LGBT character or issue.
I wouldn't consider My Best Friend's Wedding an LGBT movie just because Rupert Everett played a gay friend in it, but I'd consider Kinky Boots an LGBT movie because there's a major plot point revolving around accepting Simon/Lola for who s/he is.Anyone else consider Billy Elliot to be a lgbt movie?
Ah i love that film ^-^ But wouldn't consider it an lgbt one because it doesnt really make it clear whether Billy was gay or not... But the other kid was but he wasn't a lead
